Hoof-Care Essentials We Actually Use

ree

When it comes to hoof care, there are a lot of products on the market. Some work, some don’t, and a few have earned a permanent place in my farrier kit and rehab program.
Here are the hoof-care products I actually use on client horses and my own — plus tips on how and when to use them.

Hoof Armor

  • Why we use it: Hoof Armor creates a thin, durable coating that helps protect hooves from wear and tear. It’s especially useful for barefoot horses, thin soles, or horses in transition away from shoes. It helps mantain the proper moisture content in the hoof, too. All of this plus contains microbial properties to help prevent and treat Thrush, whiteline disease, and other bacterial issues.
  • How we use it: Applied directly after a trim, focusing on areas prone to chipping or cracking. It helps seal and protect while the hoof grows stronger.

Vetricyn Hoof Soak

  • Why we use it: My go-to for abscesses, white line disease, and hoof infections. It’s safe, non-toxic, and highly effective at cleaning and penetrating deep into the hoof.
  • How we use it: Horses stand in a soaking boot with the solution for 30–60 minutes. Afterward, I always let the hoof dry fully before applying any topical treatment.
    • Where to buy: Most Major Equine Stores (TSC, Big Dee's, Smartpak, Valley Vet)

Artimud (by Red Horse Products)

  • Why we use it: Artimud is a clay-based antimicrobial putty that packs beautifully into hoof cracks, central sulcus splits, and white line separations. It stays in place longer than most treatments.
  • How we use it: Pressed into cracks, crevices and the collatoral groove after cleaning and drying the hoof. Great for daily maintenance in tricky areas.

Field Paste (by Red Horse Products)

  • Why we use it: Field Paste is excellent for preventing and treating thrush, especially in horses living in wet or muddy conditions. It has natural antimicrobial properties and sticks well.
  • How we use it: Spread into the frog and collateral grooves with a brush or gloved hand. Works well between farrier visits to keep feet healthy.

Grooms Hand Thrush Gel

  • Why we use it: A deep-penetrating liquid treatment for stubborn thrush cases. It soaks into deeper areas where pastes and putties can’t always reach.
  • How we use it: Applied with the included pipe tip directly into the frog and deep central sulcus areas. Often used in rotation with Artimud for severe thrush management.

Final Thoughts
Healthy hooves need more than just a regular trim cycle — they often need targeted support to fight off bacteria, fungus, and environmental stressors. These five products are the ones I reach for over and over because they work, they last, and they make a visible difference in hoof health.

If your horse struggles with thrush, abscesses, or hoof wall cracks, consider adding one of these to your care routine. And if you’re not sure which is best for your situation send us a message. We do consults for clients and non-clients!!
